MERCENARIES of Mutare won their first game at the Basketball Africa League in South Africa on Tuesday.

They dismissed Lions of Namibia 64-55 and Tatenda Paul Maturure led with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

It was a good start for the Zimbabwean team at a tournament where six teams play in a round-robin and the top two progress to a second round of qualifying.

Three games were scheduled to be played on the opening day.

Ferroviario Maputo took on the Dolphins in the second game at 3:30pm, while Pacers of Zambia were set to take on Jozi Nugget in the last match of the day.
