Zimbabwe’s south western neighbor Botswana has reported its first case of coronavirus after a suspected case was detected at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport on Thursday.

Sidi Mokaeya a free-lance Journalist in Botswana told ZTN, the country’s ministry of health and wellness had quarantined one person suspected to be carrying the virus and had sent tests for further investigations to South Africa.

“Yes its authentic news, the person was quarantined at Block 8 clinic (in Gaborone) after showingsymptoms of coronavirus. I’m not sure if the individual is a foreign national or a citizen of Botswana,”Mokaeya said.

The reports of a suspected case come at a time when the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared coronavirus a global emergency as the outbreak continues to spread outside China.

WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the main reason for the declaration was ‘Not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries’.

According WHO, the virus has so far claimed more than 200 lives in China with almost 10 000 cases recorded nationally.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe has placed 129 people on a watch list for coronavirus after they arrived from countries which have recorded cases of the deadly virus.

A joint statement by the Zimbabwe government and the World Health Organisation, said this is a necessary precaution to prevent the disease.
