Teachers and learners who show signs of illness will not be allowed into Zimbabwe’s classrooms when schools reopen for final examinations this September.

According to a 12-page standard operating procedures document, learning institutions will also be required to set up isolation centres.

“If a learner or a member of staff is sick, he/she should not come to school. School or independent colleges must enforce the policy of staying at home if unwell for learners, teachers or school staff with symptoms,” reads the document, in part.

Sporting activities remain prohibited, while learners and teachers with underlying conditions will be identified.

Further, wearing masks will be compulsory.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said, “Strict adherence to standards and World Health Organisation guidelines must be observed in washing and reusing face masks.”
