Men and adolescent boys in Zimbabwe are reluctant to be tested for HIV, an expert has said.

According to UNAIDS data 1.4 million people are living with HIV in Zimbabwe with 60% of the figure being women.

The Organization for Public Health Interventions and Development (OPHID) director of programs, Sara Page-Mtongwiza said, “What we have seen in some of our data is that in terms of access to health services, access to HIV testing, access to treatment, men, including adolescent boys, are less likely to access services.”

She said many men are coming forward for testing.

“We are not finding as many men coming into health facilities. So we need to ensure that they have equal access to testing, equal access to treatment and that they are also accessing viral loads monitoring which is a key component of long term care of HIV,” she said
