Ex-Zimbabwe Football Association boss Henrietta Rushwaya was arrested on Monday for allegedly trying to smuggle six kilogrammes of gold to Dubai.
Rushwaya, who is Zimbabwe Mining Federation president, was intercepted by detectives at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
She failed to produce gold export approval notes, and is expected in court on Tuesday.
An internal police memo reads: “Detectives identified the accused as she commenced check-in processes and immigration formalities. The detectives immediately alerted the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe scanner operators to thoroughly examine the accused’s bag.
“Gold was detected by the scanner in the accused’s bag which formed part of her hand luggage. The bag was searched in the presence of the accused (by detectives) whilst other stakeholders at the airport witnessed the search.
“She alleged that she had been instructed by one Ali to leave the gold with an unidentified person at Dubai International Airport.”
