The Roil Bulawayo arts awards have honoured the late Zim hip hop star Cal Vin, by renaming this year’s Outstanding hip hop award after him.
Awards spokesperson Nkululeko Nkala told ZTN that the award will now be called the Calvin Mgcini Nhliziyo hip hop award.
“Calvin has been part of our journey from four years ago. We felt strongly that we needed to honour him,” he said.
Calvin has won three previous Roil BAA accolades. He was a nominee for this year’s edition but organisers of the event have retired his nomination.
Nkala said Calvin will also be honoured on stage at the awards ceremony scheduled for November 28.
“As someone who lived his life on stage, we are obviously going to do something on the actual day of the awards. We will pay tribute to what has become a legend,” said Nkala.
Calvin was killed in a hit and run incident near his home in Luveve, Bulawayo at the weekend.
Police are still searching for the suspected killers.
