As the MDC faction led by Thokozani Khupe heads for its extra-ordinary congress next week, an intense contest is emerging between Khupe and Secretary General, Douglas Mwonzora.

Over the weekend, Khupe blocked gap filling of the party’s 2014 structures since some of the members have either died or defected to Nelson Chamisa’s faction.

Many believe Mwonzora wanted to use the process to manipulate the electoral college by appointing his backers.

But, Mwonzora denied he was plotting to ambush his opponents.

“I have no plans that were blocked by anyone. We are proceeding with the extra ordinary congress as planned. Regarding the voters roll, it is being prepared by the department of elections and not myself. It is headed by the secretary of elections Ghandi Mudzingwa. Once the voters roll is ready it will be made available to all the candidates and all congress delegates. They will inspect the voters roll,” he said.

“I have heard these stories of people accusing me. This is the work of people who are afraid of losing. What has been happening is that scores of delegates have been attending my meetings and it looks good for my campaign. So there are people who would want to explain away their problems with the supporters and so on. We will have a very transparent congress.”

Efforts to get a comment from Khupe were fruitless. The congress will be held between the 13th and 20th of December at a venue to be advised.

Thokozani Khupe won the legitimacy battle to lead the opposition at the Supreme court which saw her and hercolleagues assuming control of everything to do with the opposition.
