Zimbabwe’s Minister of Transport Joel Biggie Matiza has died of Covid-19.
Zanu-PF Mashonaland East political commissar Herbert Shumbamhini told ZTN that Matiza died at Harare’s St Anne’s Hospital at around 7pm on Friday.
Matiza was also Zanu-PF Mashonaland East chairperson.
He is the fourth Zimbabwe Government Minister to die of the disease after Perrance Shiri (Agriculture) , Ellen Gwaradzimba (Manicaland Provincial Affairs) and Sibusiso Moyo (Foreign Affairs).
Zimbabwe’s Covid-19 cases have increased over the weeks, topping 30 047 on January 21 2021. A total of 19 569 patients have recovered; with 917 deaths reported.
The Southern African country is on lockdown as part of measures to stop the disease spreading. This has seen non-essential activities halted.
On Thursday, Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa warned against complacency, saying the latest strain spreads much faster than the first.
