Congo-Brazzaville opposition presidential candidate Guy-Brice Parfait Kolélas has died from Covid-19.
His death came as polling in the central African country’s March 21 presidential election closed. Reports indicate the 61-year-old died en route to France for treatment.
He had told supporters on social media earlier that he was “fighting death”, encouraging them to vote.
Elira Dokekias, head of the national Covid-19 response team, said the opposition leader’s condition “had been serious on Saturday”.
President Sassou Nguesso had wished Kolélas speedy recovery on Sunday.
A diabetic, Kolélas was among seven candidates in the presidential race.
