A 29-year-old Zimbabwean woman has been arrested for drowning her new-born in boiling water last week.

South Africa-based Wendy Tapiwa Chipo allegedly killed the baby after having failed to abort the pregnancy.

South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson (Northern Gauteng) Lumka Mahanjana said Chipo was remanded in custody to May 14, 2021 when she appeared at the Brits Magistrates’ Court.

“It is alleged that Wendy tried to abort her baby. When that failed and the baby came out alive, she dipped her in a 20-litre bucket of boiling water.”

Mahanjana said Chipo allegedly put the corpse in a plastic bag.

“Together with her friend, they went to bury the baby in a bush near where she stays in Sunnyway Village in Rietfontein. She asked the friend not to tell anyone about what she had done.”

However, the friend told police.
