Teachers unions in Zimbabwe are divided over the formation of a federation which will be affiliated to the Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions.
The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe accuses its peers of trying to hijack their project. It believes the federation will allow sector specific grievances to be addressed only if it remains independent.
PTUZ president Dr Takavafira zhou said “there are people who are not interested in an independent federation of teacher unions, as they benefit from the apex council. Some are even board members in government parastatals.’
Dr Zhou added that they were never invited, as the ‘hijackers’ want a compromised federation that will tow the line of the APEX council.
However, the Zimbabwe Teachers Association and eight other unions maintain that they are proceeding with the formation of the new federation.
Zimbabwe Teachers Association Secretary General, Mr Goodwill Taderera said the unveiling of the federation will be advised in due course.
