The Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises has pledged to continue empowering women and propping them up in business during the Covid-19 pandemic through the Zimbabwe Women’s Micro-Finance Bank.
In an interview with ZTN to mark International Women’s Day’s month-long celebrations, Minister Sithembiso Nyoni declared that women and girls deserve maximum support in the fight against Covid-19 as primary caregivers, health workers and community health workers.
“Women need appreciation as they make up the greatest percentage of health care workers and are at the centre of the Covid-19 response. The crisis has also highlighted the increase of unpaid work women do in the society as primary caregivers”, said Minister Nyoni.
She added, “The crisis has highlighted the disproportionate burdens carried by women whose access to essential reproductive health services is now seriously curbed among other services that they would normally have access to thereby impacting on their livelihoods and economic opportunities.”
This year’s International Women’s Day theme was “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world.”
