Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner General, Godwin Matanga has told parliament that the country’s law enforcement ability is hamstrung by lack of resources.
He said this is the reason why they are struggling to deal with the smuggling of minerals.
Commissioner General Matanga said police officers now need drones and helicopters to reign-in sophisticated criminals.
“At present we are using a helicopter from the ZDF. Unfortunately we cannot fly it all the time because we don’t have enough fuel, so again we need helicopters, something like three helicopters will do,” he said.
“Unfortunately some think helicopters are very expensive, some of the helicopters used by other police forces are cheaper than the four by fours (all terrain) vehicles we are driving,” he added.
Recently Government said the country is losing 100 kilogrammes of gold due to smuggling.
