Zambia’s founding President Dr Kenneth David Kaunda will be laid to rest on 7 July. This was announced by the country’s Vice President Mrs Inonge Wina on Monday.

In a statement Mrs Wina said the funeral proceedings will be in three phases. There will be Provincial visits from 23 June to 5 July.

The state funeral will be held on 2 July at the Heroes’ stadium in Lusaka where Heads of State and Government are expected to attend, before Dr Kaunda is laid to rest at the presidential burial site on Wednesday 7 July.

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, foreign leaders may be accompanied by just one official.

Kaunda died last Thursday at a military hospital where he had been admitted days earlier.

KK as he was affectionately known, was one of the last of the generation of African leaders who fought colonialism.
