A 29-year-old man from Snake Park, Bright Zhantali appeared before the courts today facing allegations of murder.

The court heard that on June 21st, at around 15.00 hrs Zhantali who was wearing a shirt similar to the one worn by park rangers, met the now deceased Nester Chikwengo (45) a fish vendor along Bulawayo Road where she intended to buy fish for resale. Zhantali lied that he was an off duty ranger and had cheap fish in the bush near his work place. They boarded a vehicle which plies the Lake Chivero Route.

Before arriving at the gate, they both alighted the vehicle, on the pretext that he would be seen by his alleged co-workers on duty that he had fish and they used a footpath. While in the forest he grabbed Nester and demanded for cash and valuables. He took US$30 and a Huawei P8 Lite phone.

He went on to rape Nester without protection. She screamed for help but he gagged her by the throat so that she wouldn’t make noise. While in the act after realizing that she was not responding, he rose, took her clothes and basket and burnt them at a nearby anthill and went away.

On the 4th of July, an informant Simon Makwansila went to the forest for prayers and felt a a strong smell. He went to investigate and discovered Nesters body decomposing and a report was made to the police.

Zhantali, went to WhiteHouse putting on the same attire he was wearing when he took Nester. Members of the public mobilized, apprehended and handed him over to the police. Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi remanded him to the 23rd of July for remand and advised him to approach the High Court for bail.
