Zimbabwe’s National Expo For Persons With Disabilities has kicked off in Gweru, Midlands province.

The expo, which is being hosted by the Office of the Special Advisor to the President on National Disability Issues, is running from today (Monday) to Wednesday at the Gweru Sports Club.

The theme for this year is “Disability Mainstreaming and Inclusion For a Prosperous and Empowered Society Which leaves No one Behind.”

President Mnangagwa is expected to officially open the event on Wednesday.

The official opening by the president has been hailed by Persons With Disabilities saying it shows government is taking disability issues seriously.

Disability Affairs Coordinator for the expo and national chairperson for the event, Tafadzwa Matope, told ZTN that the expo, which is in its 9th year running, will give Persons With Disabilities confidence.

“This is very important to us as persons with disabilities because it shows us that our government of Zimbabwe is taking serious recognition of persons with disabilities and the disability fraternity at large. This has given persons with disabilities confidence in our day to day living,” Tafadzwa Matope said.

Mr Matope said the event is meant to create awareness and advocacy in the disability movement, adding that various products will be showcased by Persons With Disabilities.

He said the expo will run with side events all aimed at unpacking disability issues.

“There will be exhibitions by UN agencies and entertainment will be provided by artistes with disabilities,” he said.
