Striking Zimbabwe doctors to know their fate on Friday

Disciplinary hearings for striking doctors in Zimbabwe’s public hospitals begin this Friday, a cabinet Minister has said.

Briefing journalists in Harare after Cabinet on Tuesday Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said doctors who did not comply with the Labour Court judgement directing them to return to work were being served with letters notifying them of the hearings.

“The doctors have confirmed receipt of disciplinary hearings papers.

“Meanwhile, salaries will only be paid to doctors who were providing services,” she said.

The Zimbabwe Doctors Association last week vowed that it’s members would abscond the hearings.

This, according to the Labour Act, will see the hearings being held in the absence of the doctors.

Minister Mutsvangwa said Government has intensified efforts to sustainably ameliorate the situation in the public health sector.

The strike by doctors in public hospitals has gone for more than 50 days, crippling operations at major health institution particularly in Harare and Bulawayo.

The doctors are demanding a salary review to match the current cost of living.

Government has offered the doctors 100 percent increase on on-call allowances, an offer the doctors rejected.
