Police in Zimbabwe will soon make public the names of the seven officers who threw teargas canisters into a bus full of passengers at the Harare Exhibition Park on Monday.

The officers say they were trying to arrest a tout who was driving the bus without a licence. At a press conference in Harare on Friday, Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga said the cops will be dealt with under the Zimbabwe Police Act and “account for their actions and answer to the dictates of the law”.

“We are going to charge them under the Police Act. The officers who are carrying out investigations are the ones who are going to pick the appropriate charge and definitely charge them, ” he said.

The police chief added that the matter will not be swept under the carpet.

“In as far as their names are concerned, I can give you their names through my spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi,” said Comm-Gen Matanga, adding: “But as far as I am concerned right now, l can generally say they performed their duty improperly.”
