Zimbabwe opposition party Movement for Democratic Change’s Vice Chairperson and Zengeza West legislator, Job Sikhala has been arrested.

Sikhala has been charged with subversion and is set to appear in court on Wednesday.

His arrest follows remarks he reportedly made at the weekend threatening to overthrow the incumbent Government.

The opposition leader surrendered himself to the Zimbabwe Republic Police Law and Order section at Harare Central Police Station on Tuesday where he is being detained.

Sikhala`s lawyer Obey Shava confirmed the arrest.

Legal expert and former MDC legislator Jessie Majome said Sikhala should be thoroughly investigated for his remarks.

“Whenever someone makes utterances of such a nature, their words may not be enough to warrant conviction but I would imagine that security arms of the state will take an interest in what motivated the said words,” Majome said.

On Monday, the MDC distanced itself from Sikhala’s remarks, saying the legislator was expressing his own opinion.
