New cases of typhoid have been reported in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, with four children contracting the disease.

Three of them are seven years old and the fourth is 17.

Typhoid spreads through contaminated food and water or through close contact with an infected person.

Harare is experiencing severe water shortages, resulting in residents turning to unprotected sources and thus becoming susceptible to typhoid.

Harare City Council spokesperson Mike Chideme said: “We have four cases of typhoid in Glen View suburb; three of which have been confirmed and are being attended to.

“Three are minors under seven while the fourth is a 17-year-old.”

Typhoid is endemic in the suburb, with 13 people having contracted the disease early in the year.
