Zimbabwe’s Finance secretary George Guvamatanga says treasury has enough money in its coffers to buy Covid-19 vaccines.

His remarks come amid concern that the country could be running out of vaccines, at a time when Covid-19 infections and deaths have started to peak.

Guvamatanga told Parliament on Monday that there is no shortage of Covid-19 vaccines, adding that 1.1 million doses have so far been administered, leaving 600 thousand unutilised doses.

He said what needs to be done now is to redistribute the unutilised doses from areas of low uptake to areas of high demand.

The country is expecting to receive 500 000 additional doses of Sinopharm vaccine on Saturday.

“There are enough vaccines in the country for those who need them. It was just how they were initially distributed but now the redistribution and further procurement progammes have actually started,” he said.

“The funds for the vaccine are available in US dollars. We have already spent about $40 million and we remain with about $60 million available in US dollars and it is there.

“It is there in the banks. It is held in banks which are not even the Reserve Bank. What slowed us down was the delay from the suppliers but now manufacturers are starting to produce more vaccines,” he explained.
