ZIMBABWE’S Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Professor Amon Murwira says the fired National University of Science and Technology (Nust) council paid the price for failing to spearhead the country’s re-industrialization process.

The Nust council was dissolved last month and decisions that need its approval have been put on hold for now.

Zimbabwe is on a new economic trajectory underpinned by the need to rehabilitate and revive its industrial base to achieve an upper middle income economy by 2030.

And Murwira feels Nust, under the fired board, were not playing ball.

“ Nust is one of the institutions we expect to lead the re-industrialization of the country through science and technology but it was showing a lack of energy,” he said.

Professor Murwira challenged the institution to take the lead in Zimbabwe’s industrial transformation by supporting existing industries and creating new ones.

“We do not have anything against individuals, the decision was made in the best interest of education. We dissolved the board because the institution needed to be energized,” added Murwira.
