The Zimbabwe Football Association has recalled Cosafa President Phillip Chiyangwa on allegations of influencing players from his country, Zimbabwe, to under-perform at the ongoing 2019 Afcon finals.

Zimbabwe’s football governing body leveled blame of the country’s disastrous campaign at the finals in Egypt to a third hand, accusing its former president who is now leading the regional body of sabotaging the team.

“We are disappointed that former Zifa president Phillip Chiyangwa and former ZIFA Vice President Omega Sibanda and Executive Committee Member Chamu Chiwanza, working with others, have been trying to destabilise the tranquillity that has prevailed in local football since the new Zifa board took over.

“We have since reported these individuals to Fifa,” said Zifa President Felton Kamambo.

“The emergence committee having noted the intransigence behaviour of Mr Chiyangwa and active role he has been playing in destabilising our football in particular the Afcon tournament, has also taken and communicated its decision to recall Phillip Chiyangwa from his position as Cosafa President as well as any other positions he might be holding in football across the globe,” said Kamambo.

The association has also suspended Executive Member Chiwanza, on among other allegations, electoral fraud and sabotaging the running of football in Zimbabwe.

The measures come in the wake of the country’s worst performance at the continental football jamboree.
