Fired public hospital doctors in Zimbabwe have called on the Government to table a “reasonable” salary offer.

On Thursday, President Mnangagwa said the doctors could return to work without re-applying for their posts within 48 hours.

But the doctors are digging in.

“Sadly, the moratorium has come without a new offer on the table communicated to us” the doctors said in a statement on Friday.

“Should this moratorium lapse without formal communication of an offer that is reasonable, it would stand as yet another glorious privilege that is lost”.

The doctors have also rejected the $ 100 million offer by Higher Life Foundation which targets 2 000 junior and senior doctors.

“…In as much as the support from HLF foundation is welcome, it does not address completely the demands of the doctors of a salary whose value is preserved despite soaring inflation, as well as provision of adequate and appropriate tools of trade,” added the statement.

The doctors further argue that the terms and conditions surrounding the offer by HLF do not make it a “viable long lasting solution.”

Some 448 doctors were fired for defying a Labour Court ruling ordering them back to work.

The Zimbabwe Government had asked them to re-apply for their posts but moved from that position following a request to President Mnangagwa by Catholic Bishops.
