Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 2 was passed by the National Assembly on Tuesday, and now awaits Senatorial debate.

The amendment aims to drop the presidential election running mate clause in the Constitution and to allow the sitting president to appoint judges without interviews.

It also extends the term of medically-fit judges beyond 70 years.

In addition, the Bill seeks to extend the parliamentary women’s quota by two more terms.

The constitutional provision for women’s proportional representation in Parliament, introduced in 2013 under the new constitution, was set to expire in 2023.
