Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa says his Government will collaborate with the new opposition MDC-T leadership on “consensual matters”.

Delivering his end-of-year address in the capital, Harare, on New Year’s Eve, he also sounded a warning against taking Covid-19 lightly.Further, the Zimbabwe leader said authorities are knuckling down on corruption and actively pursuing “fugitives outside the country”.

He spoke as Douglas Mwonzora assumed leadership of the MDC-T following elections on Sunday. The polls were the first since the death of the party’s founding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, in 2018.

Mwonzora landed the post ahead of Dr Thokozani Khupe, Elias Mudzuri and Morgan Komichi, and the latter are challenging this in court. President Mnangagwa said, “Let me take this opportunity to formally and personally congratulate Senator Douglas Mwonzora for prevailing at their congress.

We took particular note of his declared wish to guide and reshape the politics of opposition towards constructive engagement with the government of the day. “ Regarding Covid-19, he said: “Although distressing, the Covid-19 pandemic nevertheless provided opportunities for self reliance and innovation, particularly in the health sector.

This is evident in the renovations of hospitals, production of PPEs, acquisition of medical equipment and recruitment of more health staff.”
