Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa says his Government is implementing the Global Compensation Agreement in line with constitutional provisions.

President Mnangagwa said this as he opened a Political Actors Dialogue meeting in the capital, Harare, on Friday.

Government and ex-commercial farmers signed the $3, 5 billion agreement in July 2020, and the latter will be paid for farm improvements.

Critics of the arrangement argue that this could reverse the country’s Land Reform Programme under which farms were acquired from the ex-farmers and then redistributed to indigenes.

The programme was designed to “correct historical/colonial land imbalances”.

President Mnangagwa told the Friday meeting: “Let me restate that the Land Reform Programme is irreversible. To this end, there is no vacillation.

“The current processes with regards to land issues entail the implementation of provisions of our national Constitution, in particular, Section 295 as it relates to black indigenous Zimbabwean.

“I urge all farmers to remain focused on preparing for a successful 2020/2021 season.”
