Police in Zimbabwe are pursuing bar owners and party organisers behind social gatherings that go against Covid-19 prevention regulations.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said, “Operators who continue to defy Covid-19 health and safety measures will face severe penalties and members of the public found drinking beer at bars, beerhalls and restaurants will also be arrested by the police and made to face the due processes of the law.

“He added: “Police warn members of the public who include college and university students holding parties at homes in open contravention of the Covid-19 curfew order that the law will take its course.

“Zimbabwe is battling to curtail the spread of Covid-19, especially after health experts warned of the possibility of a third wave.

A number of citizens have been flagrantly violating prevention guidelines by mingling without masks and hosting parties. Some beerhalls are also operating despite Government prohibition.

Police have since early 2020 arrested 602 182 citizens for breaching Covid-19 prevention regulations.
