Zimbabwe’s gender based violence victims are not coming forward to report their cases.

Latest statistics from Girl Pride Africa Zimbabwe and Musasa project show that 5 306 cases of gender based violence were recorded between March 30 and October 7 this year.

Harare alone recorded 2 685 cases in the first quarter of 2019. Sadly, Gender Based Violence is not only experienced by females, but there has also been a rise in male cases. Girl Pride Africa, Zimbabwe Director, Ethel Mpezeni spoke to ZTN.

“For most of our GBV victims, it has to do with the person that they confide in. The reaction of that person is what gives a decision as to whether they should carry on with their report or not. That is where they begin. For someone to report, they are going to need somebody to stand by them and support their decision to report otherwise they will just keep quiet and we will have more unreported cases,” she said.
