Teachers in Zimbabwe have declared “incapacitation” after inconclusive talks with their employer.

They are demanding salaries of at least US$520 or the equivalent.

Last week, the teachers rejected a 40 percent salary increment which would have seen the least-paid earning close to ZW$5 000.

Education officials could not be reached for comment.

On Monday, Zimbabwe Teachers Association Secretary-General Tapson Nganunu said, “The economy has self-dollarised and transport fares are now charged in United States dollars in most routes.

“This has been worsened by the fact that teachers’ salaries have been eroded to an equivalent of between US$30 – US$35.”
