Civil servants in Zimbabwe could receive a backdated salary increase “to improve their purchasing power”.

Public Service, Labour and Social Services Minister Professor Paul Mavhima told ZTN on Wednesday that pay negotiations are expected soon.

“We are waiting for a framework for negotiations to come from Treasury,” he said.

He added, “We already have things which are happening, pointing to a considerable review of the salaries of civil servants.”

Professor Mavima also said, “Pending on availability of resources we may have to either backdate or continue from whatever time that we will achieve an agreement between the Apex Council and the Government team.”

Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions deputy secretary-general Gibson Mushangu said, “We had come up with an agreement which stated that, before the end of January we would have convened a meeting and come up with a road map towards restoration of our eroded salaries.”
