The number of road accidents over the past festive season declined by almost half compared to the same period the previous year.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police says between
December 5
2019 and January 5, 2020 about 1 518 road accidents were recorded, down from 2
430 during the same period in 2018.
Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe Acting Director of Operations, Ernest Muchena attributed the decline to awareness campaigns they are conducting.
The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Road Accident Fund (RAF) of South Africa are currently conducting an awareness campaign in South Africa.
RAF road safety manager, Thabo Makwela said they organized the campaign and set roadblocks with their Zimbabwean counterparts to improve road safety on roads in the two countries.
“In order for us to win the fight against road accidents, we have to jointly conduct these campaigns.
“As RAF, we register over 205 claims from South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and other neighbouring countries,” Makwela said. He said last year they spent R42 billion in compensating road accident victims.
