The World Food Programme has named Zimbabwe among the world’s 16 countries mostly affected by hunger.

The country is reeling from the effects of drought, cyclone Idai and the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a report issued early this month, the WFP estimates that 5-6 million people in rural Zimbabwe will be food insecure between October and December this year.

The report also states that about 2.2 million urban dwellers need food aid.

However, Government says citizens will be fed sufficiently.

Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister, Professor Paul Mavima spoke to ZTN that no Zimbabwean will die of hunger.

“We have had two successive drought seasons. We were affected by cyclone Idai and therefore, yes you know we are bound to be one of the hunger spots. But remember last year our government fed over four million people. We are continuing to do the same and no Zimbabweans have died of hunger.“
