Zimbabwe police issue New Year fireworks warning

Merry-makers who wish to launch fireworks in Zimbabwe should first notify neighbours and secure police clearance, a senior officer has said.

Offenders risk being fined ZWL$600, six months’ imprisonment or both.

Zimbabwe, like much of the world, welcomes 2020 at the stroke of midnight on Tuesday.

And as per custom, fireworks and firecrackers are already on hand to mark the transition from 2019.

Some deaths and casualties have been reported in the past, and police are not leaving anything to chance.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told ZTN News, “The law is very clear. Anyone who wants to use fireworks must notify the police in advance and get the necessary clearance. They should also notify their neighbours well in advance.”

On firecrackers, he said, “These are dangerous and may lead to serious harm. In recent years, we have dealt with cases in which minors have been seriously injured; and we are trying to avoid this.

“People are advised to buy (firecrackers) from registered retail outlets as they sell firecrackers that are not harmful to users.”

Fireworks consist of explosives and combustibles, which – when set off – generate coloured lights, smoke and noise; while a firecracker is a small explosive charge usually enclosed in a heavy paper casing.
