Zimbabweans feel the heat in Johannesburg

There is potentially volatile situation in Dieplsoot, Johannesburg, South Africa as residents are protesting against an increase in crime fueled by foreigners, among them Zimbabweans.

It is reported that things got to head following the murder of a senior police detective, Captain Oupa Matjie, in the township by suspected Zimbabweans.

Zimbabwe Community in South Africa’s spokesperson, Bongani Mazwi Mkwanazi gave ZTN an update of the situation.

“The situation is very tense. In the morning we received reports to the effect that some local community members were moving around threatening to unleash vigilantism at night so as to drive away all illegal immigrants, especially Zimbabweans,” said Mr Mkwanazi.

“They have been promising to go to every house checkinglegal travel documents and we are worried that during such tension-filled activities anything can happen.”

He said most foreign-owned shops and malls around Dieplsoot Township
were closed early yesterday to minimize cases of vandalism and looting.
