Harare City Council has set up a forensic audit team to urgently probe the operations of Zimbabwe’s capital city, after it emerged from the Auditor General’s report that the council is in serious debt, which is negatively affecting its service delivery.

Speaking at a news conference, Harare Mayor Councillor Herbert Gomba, said the forensic audit will look into the council’s operations from 2016 to date.

“My council is setting up a forensic audit into council operations from 2016 to 2019 on the procurement of goods and services and other council operations,” said mayor Gomba.

The council which, according to the Auditor General’s report, is in debt of more than US$32 million dollars, after it emerged that the city fathers were outsourcing services, instead of purchasing new equipment and vehicles for the council.

The mayor said the council will also engage the Auditor General to carry out a skills audit.
