The Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta) says the 6.8 percent decrease in the 2020 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) Ordinary level results is not surprising.

The association’s Acting Secretary General, Goodwill Taderera said: “There is actually a combo of reasons, the first one being the lockdown due to Covid-19. The second thing is that even though government brought in a number of learning models there was no connectivity and data for learners in disadvantaged areas.

“The major issue is teacher incapacitation,” he said.

Meanwhile, with the 2021 Zimsec June Examinations cancelled, candidates who started receiving their 2020 ‘O’ level results yesterday may feel hard done by if they want to rewrite certain subjects.

Traditionally candidates register in June for rewrites. However due to the Covid-19 pandemic there have been delays in the administration of public exams.

Zimsec Board Chairperson Professor Eddie Mwenje says those who want to rewrite may register for the 2021 November examinations and this gives them more time to prepare.

“Most of the candidates have been affected and it is important to give them more time to study and also register under the November examinations,” he said.
