Zororo Makamba buried

Journalist Zororo Makamba, the first Zimbabwean to succumb to Covid-19, was buried on a family farm near the capital, Harare, on Tuesday.

Close relatives told ZTN News that Makamba’s body was transported from Wilkins Infectious Diseases Hospital straight to the farm in keeping with guidelines to minimise the spread of the disease.

A relative said, “We are going to set a date when everyone will gather and mourn. For now, this is what had to be done.”

Makamba’s brother, Tawanda, declined commenting on the burial.

“As a family, we are going through a tough period. We can only entertain questions after the burial.”

Makamba tested positive for Coronavirus when he returned home from New York in early March.

He later experienced respiratory distress, leading to his admission to Wilkins Infectious Diseases Hospital in Harare.

Authorities have since quarantined individuals the broadcaster interacted with over the last two weeks.

Among such individuals are three officials in the Office of the President and Cabinet and four BancABC employees.

A second Zimbabwean who tested positive is said to be recovering in Victoria Falls.

The Zimbabwe Government has since intensified efforts to minimize interaction among citizens.

Some of the efforts include sealing borders, apart from cargo and returning residents, and restricting public gatherings to 50 people.

Those who breach this limit face 12 months’ imprisonment.

Social gatherings in bars and gymnasiums have also been prohibited.
