Zimbabwe has budgeted ZWL$60 billion to enable the Grain Marketing Board to timeously pay farmers who will deliver grain this year.

This was said by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in his 41st Independence Day Anniversary address to the nation.

“Treasury has set aside ZWL$60 billion for the timely payment of farmers by the Grain Marketing Board. The usual grain collection depots will be complemented by mobile and fixed collection points throughout the country,” he said.

This year’s maize harvest is expected to be 2.8 million tonnes, which is the country’s second highest ever.

The highest harvest on record was in 1984 when the country produced 2,952 million tonnes.

Last year, 908,000 tonnes of maize were harvested, leaving a shortfall of more than 1 million tonnes.
